Senior Director, Engineering, Cloud SQL

Minimum qualifications:

  • Experience with mission-critical database applications and an understanding and appreciation for the challenges associated with enterprise migrations and IT operations.
  • Experience inspiring followership through the ability to lead by example.
  • Proven track record of hiring great people and growing technical talent.
  • Ability to present complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to deliver against product deliverables in ambiguous environments.

Cloud SQL is Google Cloud Platform's managed relational database service and is of strategic importance to Google Cloud. Cloud SQL is one of the fastest growing large-scale services in Google Cloud Platform today, and we are seeing this growth accelerate as enterprises start migrating more of their mission critical workloads to Cloud. It provides a fully managed database service with industry leading availability, security, and ease of use. Cloud SQL offers multiple database engines including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server, with more in development. Building upon Google’s leadership in infrastructure (compute, networking, storage, security) and in large-scale data management (Spanner, Big Query, Bigtable), we are developing the best data management platform for customers to run their workloads.

The GCP Databases team is seeking an experienced executive to lead development for Cloud SQL Databases. In this role, you will run engineering for the control plane, data plane and the core database engine team for multiple database engines in the portfolio, developing innovative and powerful technologies to solve customer needs. Development in this team ranges from kernel development within Database Engine Kernels like MySQL, to building large-scale fault-tolerant services.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $349,000-$485,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Build a community of technical leaders to drive technical decision making, prioritization, architecture, and direction for the product.
  • Work closely with key customers, advisory councils, the open source community and other external forums to represent Google’s databases.
  • Develop and own the appropriate roadmap and strategy while prioritizing pre-existing initiatives to drive multifold returns for the Cloud business broadly and the production teams specifically.
  • Partner and help drive great cross-functional relationships with internal leadership, stakeholders, and partners to help create SQL products for the Cloud.
