Staff Software Engineer, Pixel Camera

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development.
  • 5 years of experience with Graphics and Imaging, Cameras, Operating Systems, and Memory Architecture.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • Experience in Java and Python with proficiency programming in C++.
  • Experience with mobile OS framework in the fields of camera, media, and graphics.
  • Knowledge of Android performance profiling and memory management.

The Pixel Camera team's mission is to build innovative camera and software experiences that lead the entire Android ecosystem. We are passionate about building the world's best cameras and camera experiences to delight our users, partnering with teams across Google.

We build camera system software layers running below Android camera public APIs for Pixel phones, which offer full camera functionality for Google Camera App and all third party camera apps. Camera system software builds up feature sets and infrastructures that lay out the foundation of delivering industry leading mobile camera experience.

The Google Pixel team focuses on designing and delivering the world's most helpful mobile experience. The team works on shaping the future of Pixel devices and services through some of the most advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics. This includes bringing together the best of Google’s artificial intelligence, software, and hardware to build global smartphones and create transformative experiences for users across the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Drive improvements across the Android camera, media, and graphics frameworks for improved camera experience.
  • Develop the software stack that supports the Android Camera Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), including implementing Pixel camera specific features and device drivers for hardware IPs. 
  • Optimize camera performance, power, and memory, and develop the infrastructure to achieve this.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance large scale software solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership on high-impact projects.
