About the job

Google's custom-designed machines make up one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world. The Hardware Testing Engineering team ensures that this cutting-edge equipment is reliable. In the R&D lab, you design test equipment for prototypes of our machinery and develop the protocols used to scale these tests for the entire global team. Working closely with design engineers, you give input on designs to improve our hardware until you're sure it meets Google's standards of quality and reliability.

Google Quantum AI's mission is to build an error-corrected quantum computer. Our roadmap relies on fabricating high-coherence quantum devices with extreme precision. The Photolithography module is the heartbeat of this fabrication process, defining the intricate geometries of our qubits and interconnects.

To achieve this, we operate a fleet of advanced patterning tools, including projection steppers, contact aligners, and automated resist tracks. As part of the Equipment Team, you ensure these optical and mechanical systems deliver the nanometer-scale accuracy required to push the boundaries of quantum physics. The Photolithography Team drives the reliability and performance of the patterning module. We own the lifecycle of the lithography cell, from resist coating and baking to sub-micron exposure and development.

In this role, you are the technical owner of our lithography fleet. You will lead troubleshooting of optical and robotic systems, execute preventative maintenance, and manage upgrades to extend tool capabilities. Your expertise ensures the stability of the critical patterning processes that define our quantum processors. You will be an engineer who loves high-precision machinery.

The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $120,000-$172,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Learn more about benefits at Google.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct diagnostics, optical alignments, and repairs on steppers, mask aligners, and automated resist tracks to ensure maximum uptime.
  • Lead the scoping, evaluation, and procurement of new patterning and metrology equipment tailored to specific quantum device requirements.
  • Manage the installation and qualification of new lithography cells and drive upgrades to improve overlay accuracy and resolution.
  • Support patterning operations across multiple facilities, ensuring consistent tool matching and standardization between research and production lines.
  • Analyze tool performance data to optimize wafer throughput, reduce chemical consumption, and improve the thermal/environmental stability of the lithography bay.
