Communications Manager

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience in public relations, media relations, or communications.
  • Experience in developing, shaping and leading external communications and media relations strategies within technical organizations.
  • Experience in communications principles, traditional and emerging channels, and broader communications trends in Portugal or Greece.
  • Experience advising executives and managing internal and external stakeholder relationships.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism.
  • Experience in managing ambiguous and complex communications challenges with the ability to escalate issues quickly.
  • Ability to lead multiple simultaneous work streams to deliver business impact.
  • Ability to communicate in Portuguese or Greek fluently as this is a customer-facing role that requires interactions in Portuguese or Greek with local stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

About the job

As a member of the Global Communications & Public Affairs team, you will work cross-functionally to help communicate with journalists and other thought leaders; devise specific communications materials and campaigns; engage in face-to-face meetings with commentators and other opinion formers; and develop print and web-based material supporting these campaigns. We're looking for great communicators who can understand complex issues and explain them in person and also via well written, simple blog posts, FAQs, video scripts and more.

In this role, you will shape and maintain Google's favorable public image by leading impactful communication strategies and engaging with key external stakeholders. You will drive measurable outcomes for external communications strategies and ensure the development of long-term plans that match its overarching business goals. You will act as a subject-matter specialist within Google's external communications ecosystems including new media platforms, creators as well as being able to anticipate and address future issues. You will leverage your knowledge of executive management, stakeholder management, and business acumen to coach executives on PR and external communications, represent the outside world to Google, and manage Google's reputation.We help inform and educate users, advertisers, partners, opinion leaders--and our own employees--about the benefits of Google's products, our distinctive company culture/values and our approach to the big public policy issues of the day. You are quick-witted, entrepreneurial and intellectually curious. To succeed in this role, you are willing to try new things and can manage numerous projects with tight deadlines. Things happen quickly at Google, and to do great work, you need to be an enthusiastic team player who can work cross-functionally with partners across PR, Communications, Marketing, Product, and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of communications plans and strategies for Portugal and Greece to keep the public informed of Google’s programs, products, accomplishments, or point of views.
  • Drive development of high-quality communications materials as well as creative strategies of engaging with the different audiences through traditional and new media formats.
  • Respond to media inquiries and requests for information release. Support the angle of the story and work with the journalist to provide additional information.
  • Coordinate the work with the external agencies in both countries to ensure the correct and successful implementation of the plans and strategies.
  • Provide recommended solutions and understand the right levers to pull in a situation and interplay between them. Coordinate and facilitate interviews and prepare briefing materials for key spokespeople, coaching execs on external communications to be effective Google spokespeople.
