Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in software engineering, with experience building technical products and services.
  • 10 years of experience with iOS app development and tools, including building apps with installed user base.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related field.
  • Experience with AI agents, AI-enabled coding tools, and AI chat products.
  • Development experience with AI-centered product features. Experience with the leadership of a user-facing product effort.
  • Excellent mathematical skills with knowledge of statistical methods.
  • Ability to influence outside lines of formal authority, working on and with technical and cross-functional or highly matrixed teams to get things done.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, planning, and decision-making skills.

About the job

The Search Experience team is responsible for building and maintaining an amazingly useful Search user interface across every client, from desktop Chrome to our iOS Google app. We are reinventing the Search experience from the ground up with new AI capabilities like AI Overviews, conversations in AI Mode, and generative UI to help users synthesize huge amounts of information, make sense of complex topics, and make progress on difficult tasks. The team runs extensive live experiments, technical metric and feedback analysis, and UXR evaluations to continually optimize our product for our users.

Our iOS Google app is one of the premier entry points to the Google product, and one of the top apps in the App Store. It creatively uses iOS app capabilities and Google technology to make common user journeys efficient and delightful and to enable new use cases like multimodal search and organizing long running information journeys.

As Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for the technical direction of the iOS Google app, balancing product strategy, UX outlook, platform capabilities, and applying innovative new capabilities.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $307,000-$427,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Build app user experiences. Design integrations of device capabilities (i.e., voice, camera, video, haptics, local computation) and server-side intelligence.
  • Participate in scalable development of server/client hybrid rendering systems.
  • Optimize performance and efficiency of critical use cases.
  • Onboard and introduce new features to users and cross-product integrations.
  • Contribute significantly to Search’s strategic roadmap.
