Software Engineer, Logging, Core

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree in an industry setting.
  • 2 years of experience with developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage or hardware architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • Experience in building and maintaining large-scale distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with debugging, observability, and logging concepts and tools
  • Proficiency in C++ or Go.
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills to work both on their own and collaboratively within Google’s production environment and infrastructure.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and improve software for Google's large-scale distributed tracing systems.
  • Collaborate with team members and cross-functional partners to deliver new features and enhancements to the tracing infrastructure, ensuring high quality, performance, and scalability.
  • Contribute to the technical goals and roadmap for the evolution of tracing tools to meet emerging needs, including those from Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) and agentic workflows.
  • Analyze and optimize the performance and efficiency of tracing components and data pipelines.
  • Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and architectural decisions while troubleshooting and resolving complex tracing infrastructure issues and maintaining technical documentation.
