External Communications Manager, Search Thought Leadership

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience in communications within the technology industry or in a corporate environment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience building and executing new programs and managing them to scale.
  • Experience with direct communication to audiences through social media, press, and owned platforms.
  • Experience working on large events and projects that require cross-functional collaboration.
  • Experience working with executive leaders and developing their external presence across traditional and new media channels.
  • Ability to turn complex technical information into compelling stories across many audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to grow in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.

About the job

As a member of the Global Communications & Public Affairs team, you will work cross-functionally to help communicate with journalists and other thought leaders; devise specific communications materials and campaigns; engage in face-to-face meetings with commentators and other opinion formers; and develop print and web-based material supporting these campaigns. We're looking for great communicators who can understand complex issues and explain them in person and also via well written, simple blog posts, FAQs, video scripts and more.

As the External Communications Manager, you will be responsible for driving our future of Search narrative and showcasing continued business momentum. You’ll work with media to land stories, interviews, and other media opportunities, and you'll help our business and sales teams tell a compelling story about the future of Search. You will be responsible for vetting, preparing and executing public speaking and press opportunities for Search executives and representatives across the company who are carrying our narrative. This includes keynote speeches, round-tables, broadcast and podcast interviews and more. You will work closely with international teams when their leaders discuss the future of Search in local public appearances. You will also design and implement a spokesperson training program so that more leaders across the company are able to talk about Search.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $134,000-$196,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Serve as the product communications lead to empower teams across Google to extend the future of Search narrative to new audiences.
  • Build and maintain relationships with all types of media, including new media, creators, and business press. Land media opportunities such as podcasts, video, events, lists, and press.
  • Execute an ongoing thought leadership program that includes speaking opportunities, press visits, and events across regions for Search leaders.
  • Expand the bench of Search spokespeople who can deliver our future of Search narrative. Develop and execute training programs to keep our spokespeople and cross-functional stakeholders up-to-date on our narrative.
