Staff Software Engineer, Server Software, Platforms Infrastructure Engineering

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
  • 5 years of experience working with embedded operating systems.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • Experience with Embedded Systems, C, C++, Firmware, Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, Linux and Shell Scripting.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 8 years of experience with data structures/algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience in a leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional or cross-business projects.
  • Experience with modularized, high-performance, reliable servers, DevOps, release management, integration testing, open-source development or Open Compute Projects (OCP).
  • Experience in software/hardware integration, system bring-up, diagnostics and testing and proficiency with BIOS, Kernel, BMC, PCIe, Python and Go.

Platforms Server Software drives the server technologies that
power all of Google's products and services, including Gmail, YouTube,
Search, Google Cloud and more.

In this role, you will unlock the full potential of Google’s servers for our data centers. You will serve as an expert in server architecture and amp, firmware/driver stack platform standards, and software ecosystems. You will play a critical role in leading the development and implementation of our server solutions.

The ML, Systems, & Cloud AI (MSCA) organization at Google designs, implements, and manages the hardware, software, machine learning, and systems infrastructure for all Google services (Search, YouTube, etc.) and Google Cloud. Our end users are Googlers, Cloud customers and the billions of people who use Google services around the world.

We prioritize security, efficiency, and reliability across everything we do - from developing our latest TPUs to running a global network, while driving towards shaping the future of hyperscale computing. Our global impact spans software and hardware, including Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, the leading AI platform for bringing Gemini models to enterprise customers.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of software engineers in designing and developing server firmware and software across functional areas like BIOS, BMC and Kernel.
  • Develop and integrate software for next-generation servers using advanced processor technologies.
  • Collaborate with technical infrastructure and cloud teams, product managers and technical program managers to impact compute systems for Google's data center.
  • Own end-to-end development from requirements definition and system design to implementation, testing and integration while ensuring quality through design reviews, code implementation oversight and test plan validation.
  • Present the team's projects to executive leadership during planning, design and pilot entry reviews.
