About the job

As an organization, Google maintains a portfolio of research projects driven by fundamental research, new product innovation, product contribution and infrastructure goals, while providing individuals and teams the freedom to emphasize specific types of work. As a Research Scientist, you'll setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly, managing deadlines and deliverables while applying the latest theories to develop new and improved products, processes, or technologies. From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, our research scientists work on real-world problems that span the breadth of computer science, such as machine (and deep) learning, data mining, natural language processing, hardware and software performance analysis, improving compilers for mobile platforms, as well as core search and much more.

As a Research Scientist, you'll also actively contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings, with ideas inspired by internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world.

Our team's mission is protecting billions of Android users from abusive apps, including malware, content abuse, impersonation, and behavioral abuse. Preventing abuse is fascinating technically, and it features an adversarial scenario where we try to detect bad actors who try, in turn, to evade detection. Impact and success translates directly to keeping the Android ecosystem safe and protecting users from a variety of types of abuse.

We develop products and services to ensure a safe and high quality experience for users of Android apps across the Android ecosystem with three billion users. We also protect Google's brand and business.

Android is Google’s mobile operating system powering more than 3 billion devices worldwide. Android is about bringing computing to everyone in the world. We believe computing is a super power for good, enabling access to information, economic opportunity, productivity, connectivity between friends and family and more. We think everyone in the world should have access to the best computing has to offer. We provide the platform for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and developers to build compelling computing devices (smartphones, tablets, TVs, wearables, etc) that run the best apps/services for everyone in the world.

Responsibilities

  • Identify problems and threat trends and support the team to move fast and come up with new ideas to manage the adversarial nature of the space and the adaptation of abusers, who would constantly come up with new strategies to bypass our protections.
  • Develop and publish novel research on Android security and AI agent safety, collaborating with global academic and technical partners to improve the defenses.
  • Design neuro-symbolic and agent-powered systems to identify privacy threats, reverse-engineer apps, and ensure the safety of autonomous systems interacting with mobile web environments.
  • Perform analysis on the codebases (e.g., Java, JavaScript, Native) using machine learning to detect malware, bypass obfuscation, and neutralize evasion techniques.
  • Work with teams across Google such as AdSpam, Android Platform, Actor Trust, Google Research to address abuse problems together.
