Manufacturing Engineer II, Global Manufacturing Operations

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in mechanical sustaining engineering.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with Product Life-cycle Management (PLM), Engineering Change Order (ECO) Management, and Fabrication processes including sheet metal, injection molding, and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining.
  • Experience partnering with Contract Manufacturers (CMs) to resolve issues.
  • Experience in 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) (SolidWorks, Creo), Tolerance Analysis, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural evaluation.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis, implement corrective actions, and analyze mechanical/environmental testing data.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills.

Google's custom-designed equipment makes up one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world. The Manufacturing Operations team is responsible for providing the manufacturing capability to deliver this state-of-the-art physical infrastructure.

As a Manufacturing Mechanical Engineer, you will evaluate the product designs and create the processes, tools and procedures behind Google’s powerful search technology. When vendors build parts for our infrastructure, you are right there alongside ensuring manufacturing processes are repeatable and controlled. You will collaborate with Commodity Managers and Design Engineers to determine Google’s infrastructure needs and product specifications. Your work ensures the various pieces of Google’s infrastructure fit together perfectly and keep our systems humming along smoothly for a seamless user experience. You will be responsible for leading the development, qualification, and continuous improvement of Mechanical parts and the integration of all them at partner sites globally.


The Global Manufacturing Operations organization works closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Operations, and Commodity Management teams as well as our Manufacturing Partners to produce Google Cloud infrastructure for Google's fleet of data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce manufacturing standards and approve process changes at Contract Manufacturers (CMs), serving as the front-line lead for triaging risks, escalations, and production interrupts.
  • Drive New Product Introduction (NPI) builds and production readiness, actively identifying Design for Excellence (DFx) opportunities and communicating lessons learned from manufacturing to optimize future designs.
  • Build, test, and rapidly prototype (3D printing, machining) new mechanical components and hardware systems in a fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Collaborate closely with optical and electrical engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration and robust hardware performance.
  • Lead component sourcing strategies, including the qualification of second-source vendors and validation of new parts to ensure supply chain resilience.
