Senior Linux Kernel Engineer, Engineering Productivity, Google Pixel

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 3 years of experience working with embedded operating systems.
  • 3 years of experience building low level device drivers.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Experience developing software for test and measurement equipment.
  • Experience with FPGA (Xilinx toolchain, Petalinux).
  • Knowledge of AI/Machine Learning concepts and frameworks.

The Pixel Platform Realization team drives the foundation of future Pixel devices by delivering fully validated and characterized hardware platforms. We are responsible for the end-to-end architecture, design, simulation, and implementation of platform reference designs, ensuring they meet the highest standards. Through the development of cutting-edge toolsets, robust validation methodologies, and technology development vehicles, our team enables the and on-schedule delivery of the entire Pixel product portfolio. You will be involved with working cross-functionally with silicon, systems, Software (SW), Hardware (HW), technology teams, and product teams to deliver SW tools to better troubleshoot and optimize Google Pixel products for our users. A significant part of the work of our teams is making and supporting lab instruments and tools that are more capable/performant than off-the-shelf instruments for use cases specific to our Pixel hardware and components to solve some of the most tests issues that Pixel faces. This will include lab bench measurement instruments in addition to software tools such as our schematic-understanding platform to help engineers brainstorm solutions to issues and complete AI-driven reviews of their designs.

The team works on shaping the future of Pixel devices and services through some of the most advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics. This includes bringing together the best of Google’s artificial intelligence, software, and hardware to build global smartphones and create transformative experiences for users across the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $166,000-$244,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead a team creating instruments and software tools for characterization, optimization, and diagnosing system issues across Google's Consumer Hardware teams.
  • Architect and design new instruments to address emerging needs, collaborating with adjacent engineering disciplines. Develop performant firmware, drivers, and UI software using C, C++, and Python for processor- and FPGA-based test, validation, and protocol-analysis/exercising instruments.
  • Direct the team's AI platform initiative focused on consumer hardware design understanding and assistance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional hardware, software, silicon, and system engineering teams to design and implement specialized solutions.
  • Validate performance and support engineering users in partnership with cross-functional teams.
