Staff Engineer, Cellular Systems

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 years of experience in wireless communication technologies (e.g., LTE, 5G NR).
  • Experience in a systems engineering or architecture role for mobile devices.
  • Experience in cellular systems performance, including power, throughput, latency, and mobility, and end-to-end cellular architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience shipping consumer electronics with a focus on cellular performance.
  • Experience defining a technical roadmap and strategy for complex wireless systems.
  • Experience in optimizing cellular modem performance, shipping consumer products, including improved metrics such as power consumption, data throughput, latency, and connection reliability.
  • Excellent communication and people management skills, with the ability to influence and align stakeholders and cross-functional teams.

About the job

In this role, you will architect and drive system-level solutions that define user experience. You will have the ability to influence and work with the latest cellular modems for Pixel phones and Wearables. In this cross-functional role, you will collaborate with engineers from across Google to solve the challenging performance problems and execute on design goals for the next generation of our products.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $174,000-$258,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical roadmap and system architecture for cellular performance, balancing the critical trade-offs between power consumption, throughput, latency, coverage, and thermal performance.
  • Lead development of AI/ML for cellular systems.
  • Architect and lead the optimization of the end-to-end cellular system. Drive improvements across the full stack, from RF front-end architecture and L1/L2/L3 protocol behavior to interactions with the application processor and Android framework.
  • Lead the investigation and resolution of the complex, system-level performance issues in both lab and live network environments, utilizing log analysis and defining novel testing methodologies to improve user experience.
  • Serve as a domain expert on cellular systems. Partner with cross-functional partners in System Architecture, Product Management, and other hardware/software teams to align on system architecture and deliver end-to-end product excellence.
