Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of professional experience in engineering and technical innovation.

As a member of the team, you have a direct impact on design and feature enhancements to keep our systems running smoothly. You also ensure that network operations are safe and efficient by monitoring network performance, coordinating planned maintenance, adjusting hardware components and responding to network connectivity issues. As a Principal Network Engineer in ONT (Optical Networking Technologies), you will be responsible for driving the technical strategy for the system of high-capacity fiber optic cables that encircle the globe, under land and sea, connecting data centers to each other and to users. Your scope will include L1 architecture, optical system (hardware and software), and infrastructure to facilitate deployment automation and integration of optical technologies with other systems.

You will be working with partners in the industry, including vendors, and technology leaders to push the boundary of optical technology.

You will be partnering and supporting a number of peers across multiple areas: GNT (Technology development), GND (the Network Deployment team), NPD (the Network Planning and Design team), GSN (the Global Submarine Network team), and others.

You will be contributing to the health and growth of the ONT team in cooperation with the ONT team manager.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $253,000-$363,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Work with vertical teams within GGN (Google Global Networking) to define requirements and solutions for optical interconnect systems that meet the needs of internal and external customers and fulfill the objectives of GGN.
  • Define and set the overall technical strategy with a focus on long-term objectives.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to the Optical Networking Technologies (ONT) team as well as broader GNT (Global Networking Technologies) organization.
  • Guide the Optical Networking Technologies (ONT) team in translating conceptual design into practical plans to deliver end-to-end solutions that meet an appropriate tradeoff of cost, manageability, reliability, evolvability, and ease of development and deployment.
  • Engage in research collaboration with prominent academic and industry groups and drive game-changing innovations for Google optical networking.
