About the job
Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will provide key technical contributions, lead projects, and mentor junior team members. You will be responsible for optimizing YouTube playback decisions across every YouTube playback globally including resolution, codec, buffer sizes, and content sources.
In this role, you will improve playback performance by identifying system improvements, debugging problems, collaborating with server, client, and networking and protocol teams to develop new capabilities. You will contribute through coding, metrics analysis, and project ideation, scoping, and execution. You may also lead through developing road maps, collaborating with partner teams, and presenting updates to leadership.
Responsibilities
- Lead and execute critical projects related to YouTube's playback control and performance, demonstrating ambition and driving significant technical impact.
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering their growth and guiding them through technical issues.
- Take on server-driven 'Playback Start' improvements, including a holistic review of the interactions within YouTube’s server infrastructure and content delivery logic.
- Codify the relationship between our client-server protocol and serving infrastructure, building a Application Programming Interface (API) in both code and organizational structure to enable effective domain ownership and reliable requirements.
- Ramp up on the interaction between YouTube playback and protocol standards such as Standard Communication with Network Elements (SCONE), L4S, etc.
