Software Engineer, TV Systems

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development in the C++ or Java programming languages.
  • 2 years of experience working with embedded operating systems.
  • 2 years of experience working with the Android operating system.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • Experience with Android OS and system software development, validation and release on consumer hardware products.
  • Experience in development, debugging, and testing work in Android framework, power management, networking and input modalities.
  • Understanding of the Linux kernel, device drivers, and system on a chip (SoC) architecture.
  • Ability to work on ambiguous system-level problems and solve problems that cross hardware/software boundaries.

The TV Systems team plays a pivotal role in this success by elevating TV device quality and performance through hardware and platform-level engineering.

Our mission is to organize the world's media and build the world's most loved and helpful Android TV OS. The TV Systems team is a critical part of this success story, working closely with System on a Chip (SoC) and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partners to raise the quality of devices powered by our TV OS (Operating System) while scaling to many new users.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $147,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Advocate end-to-end system software development and integration for OEM retail partner launches.
  • Lead the technical bring-up of next-generation prototype hardware systems, working with unreleased TV devices.
  • Innovate, design, implement, and test new software features for TV embedded systems (streaming sticks, panel TVs and set top boxes) and additional TV related products (remote controls, speakers, soundbars).
  • Partner with SoC vendors and hardware providers to advocate for and implement enhancements that optimize device throughput and resource utilization. Build high quality Android TV operating system reference designs that provide the foundational hardware and software for TV OEMs to launch devices with quality at scale.
  • Help develop standardized certification tests (e.g., TVTS) and comprehensive documentation to maintain performance quality and ensure long-term ecosystem scalability.
