Mechanical Testing Engineer

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • 5 years of experience in mechanical test engineering for consumer hardware.
  • Experience with test fixture design, assembly, development, system bring-up, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with factory automation, ongoing system monitoring, and predictive maintenance.
  • Experience with design validation, DOE, and failure analysis investigation.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling tools such as NX and SolidWorks.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with high-volume consumer electronics manufacturing, particularly with smartphones or similar devices.
  • Experience with mechanical tests such as channel testing, water leak tests, and durability/life cycle testing.
  • Expertise in mechanical design principles, fixture design, and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of DFM (Design for Manufacturability) principles and a track record of providing effective feedback on product design.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and people management skills.

As a Hardware Testing and Manufacturing Engineer, you will join the global operations organization working on factory testing and automation for Google’s 1P consumer hardware products. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing mechanical manufacturing test fixtures and processes. Your expertise in hardware testing, manufacturing and mechanical engineering will be essential as you review product designs for manufacturability, provide valuable feedback to product design teams, and drive the development of innovative test solutions for features like water resistance, button functionality, and other critical metrics. You will rely on your knowledge and experience with CAD, test equipment, electro-mechanical systems, and fabrication methods to provide solutions to engineering problems, including fixture design, automation, operation, and troubleshooting of factory test systems.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $138,000-$202,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical execution of mechanical and manufacturing test strategies, ensuring high design quality and technical excellence.
  • Oversee the end-to-end development of test fixtures from concept to mass production, including the creation of detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for precise tolerancing.
  • Collaborate with Product Design and Operations teams to review new concepts, identify potential challenges, and provide DFM feedback to improve manufacturability.
  • Develop and implement new mechanical tests and methodologies to address product design changes and evolving quality requirements.
  • Manage technical project schedules and vendor engagements to ensure the on-time delivery of high-quality test solutions.
