Hardware Lab Generalist, Quantum AI

Minimum qualifications:

  • Associate's degree, trade school certification, other verifiable training in a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of experience in Laboratory Safety Protocols (Chemicals, Lasers, High Voltage, etc), Mechanical Metrology (CAD, Use of calipers, micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, Instron, etc), and Electrical Metrolgy (multimeter, O-scope, etc).

Preferred qualifications:

  • 3 years of experience in Vendor Management and Procurements (procurement of electromechanical and laboratory components), PCB and FPCB rework (soldering, de-soldering, crimping, etc), and Fabrication Techniques used for rapid prototyping (Laser cutting, 3D printing, drill press, band saw, etc).
  • 3 years of experience creating and maintaining technical documentation (Drawings, Schematics, SOPs, etc).
  • 3 years of experience integrating complex systems (audio, video, compute, optics, etc).
  • 3 years of experience testing, troubleshooting, and with failure analysis.

Google's custom-designed machines make up one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world. The Hardware Testing Engineering team ensures that this cutting-edge equipment is reliable. In the R&D lab, you design test equipment for prototypes of our machinery and develop the protocols used to scale these tests for the entire global team. Working closely with design engineers, you give input on designs to improve our hardware until you're sure it meets Google's standards of quality and reliability.

As a Hardware Lab Generalist, you will be a crucial member of our technical team, responsible for the direct assembly, installation, and integration of critical hardware systems. You will bring our designs to life by meticulously building out racks, enclosures, and cryostats with the necessary cabling and electronic components. You will play a key role in ensuring the performance and reliability of our systems by calibrating, testing, and troubleshooting a wide range of electronic instruments and components. Working from detailed schematics and technical documentation, you will conduct comprehensive electrical tests and maintain precise records of your work. Collaborating closely with our engineering teams, you will provide essential support for the development, testing, and deployment of systems.The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $93,000-$133,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records of configurations, tests, and calibrations performed while collaborating with engineering and other technical teams to support system development, testing, and deployment.
  • Identify, diagnose, and resolve hardware, software, and networking issues at the component, module, and system level while reading and interpret technical documentation, including schematics, wiring diagrams, and assembly instructions.
  • Utilize various electronic test equipment, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and network analyzers, to perform diagnostics and troubleshoot issues.
  • Calibrate, test, and adjust electronic instruments, components, or systems to meet performance specifications and quality standards while conducting comprehensive electrical testing, including continuity checks, signal path verification, and functional tests, to ensure system integrity and performance.
  • Assemble, install, and integrate cabling and electronic hardware, components, and sub-assemblies into racks, enclosures, cryostats, or other designated system frameworks.
