About the job
At Google, research-focused Software Engineers are embedded throughout the company, allowing them to setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly. Ideas may come from internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world.
From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, engineers work on real-world problems including artificial intelligence, data mining, natural language processing, hardware and software performance analysis, improving compilers for mobile platforms, as well as core search and much more. But you stay connected to your research roots as an active contributor to the wider research community by partnering with universities and publishing papers.
The Gemmaverse Variants program pursues and supports end-to-end research and landing of high-impact, specialized Gemma variants (e.g., C2SGemma, SignGemma, DolphinGemma), transforming pioneering ideas into beneficial, real-world solutions to human-scale problems. Our mission is to demonstrate the positive power of AI and establish Gemma as the definitive example of “what AI should be used for”, leveraging tight–knit collaborations across GDM units, Google, and external partnerships to develop breakthrough models.
Artificial intelligence will be one of humanity’s most transformative inventions. At Google DeepMind, we are a pioneering AI lab with exceptional interdisciplinary teams focused on advancing AI development to solve complex global challenges and accelerate high-quality product innovation for billions of users. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, ensuring safety and ethics are always our highest priority.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to core tools and infrastructure for LLM research, driving major efforts across internal and external codebases to optimize and add new research capabilities.
- Develop software to launch Gemmaverse open models publicly, ensuring they perform excellently and intuitively across various 3P technical stacks and devices (e.g., servers, laptops, phones).
- Serve as a technical expert for external open-model systems (e.g., HuggingFace, Ollama, Keras) to drive high satisfaction and enablement for the external user community.
- Collaborate with researchers, applied partners, and external engineers (e.g., Vlmm) to contribute to the broader AI ecosystem, including PyTorch, Jax, Gemini, and Gemax.
- Create documentation and tutorials for audiences, including Googlers and external researchers, to help users successfully adopt Gemma variants and technical artifacts.
