Software Engineering Manager, Shopping

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders/clients.
  • Experience with database, scripting, or business intelligence tools.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience directly managing a larger team (e.g., career development, recruiting, improving collaboration, communication).
  • Ability to successfully collaborate with cross-teams and within cross-product areas.
  • Ability to deliver trustworthy data that drives key business decisions within Google and by advertisers.
  • Ability to take ownership of highly visible systems and projects with senior leads.
  • Ability to make thoughtful and sometimes difficult organizational and technical choices around where to invest and divest to achieve project success.
  • Passion for unambiguous writing and precise execution.

As a Software Engineering Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

You are responsible for the management of the Metrics Data Engineering team, who scale the shopping metrics platform by ingesting new data, co-developing and implementing new metrics, and collaborating with cross-functional partners to establish a canonical data warehouse providing key insights for the organization. These insights are used within Google and shared externally with our business partners to drive business decisions. You'll oversee and coordinate the work of your reports, coach and grow your team, and collaborate with stakeholders across the entire shopping organization to align on requirements, influence metrics definitions, and standardize metrics storage and processing within a single platform.

The mission for Google Commerce is to be an essential part of the shopping journey for consumers - from inspiration to to a simple and secure checkout experience - and the best place for retailers/merchants to connect with consumers. We support and partner with the commerce ecosystem, from large retailers to small local merchants, to give them the tools, technology and scale to thrive in today’s digital world.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the data engineering discipline for shopping in commerce and build and lead the team for shopping, while owning the effort to scale the shopping metrics platform in terms of data, metrics, and users.
  • Define roadmaps for the team to deliver work units in a timely manner. Scope work units and oversee the work done by the team members.
  • Grow and coach team members, by building a team culture in which people feel empowered to challenge requirements and status quo of existing metrics.
  • Influence the definition of business critical metrics in collaboration with cross-functional partners in Product Management, Engineering, Data Science, Finance, and SRE.
  • Work with various cross-product area and cross-functional partners to centralize various data warehouses from commerce and finance, into a single one that will be the definitive source of truth.
