Engineering Analyst, Messages, Spam, Abuse, Trust and Safety

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in data analysis, including identifying trends, generating summary statistics, and drawing insights from quantitative and qualitative data.
  • 5 years of experience managing projects and defining project scope, goals, and deliverables.
  • 3 years of experience in coding (e.g., Python, R, SQL), querying databases, or statistical analysis.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a quantitative discipline.
  • 8 years of experience working on signal development, data analysis, cyber-security, or anti-abuse.
  • 5 years of experience with one or more of the following languages: SQL, R, Python, or C++.
  • Experience with fraud/abuse investigations, fraud risk management, security and threat analysis in the context of internet, telephony, or communication-related products.
  • Knowledge in messaging or SIM/Phone Number fraud and abuse.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Trust & Safety team members are tasked with identifying and taking on the biggest problems that challenge the safety and integrity of our products. They use technical know-how, excellent problem-solving skills, user insights, and proactive communication to protect users and our partners from abuse across Google products like Search, Maps, Gmail, and Google Ads. On this team, you're a big-picture thinker and strategic team-player with a passion for doing what’s right. You work globally and cross-functionally with Google engineers and product managers to identify and fight abuse and fraud cases at Google speed - with urgency. And you take pride in knowing that every day you are working hard to promote trust in Google and ensuring the highest levels of user safety.

The Messaging Spam and Abuse team works on preventing abuse with-in the messaging ecosystem. The team is responsible for keeping users safe from phishing, malware, scams, and other unwanted interactions in messaging products. In this role, you will partner with product teams to identify potential abuse vectors ahead of new launches and establish, evaluate, and maintain abuse protections.

We partner with teams across Google to deliver bold solutions in abuse areas such as malware, spam and account hijacking. A diverse team of Analysts, Policy Specialists, Engineers, and Program Managers, we work to reduce risk and fight abuse across all of Google’s products, protecting our users, advertisers, and publishers across the globe in over 40 languages.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and solve problems using data and statistical methods.
  • Improve tools and automated systems through data analysis, technical knowledge, and present to stakeholders.
  • Develop an understanding of abuse in messaging, current cross-product workflows, and available intelligence.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to design and build anti-abuse protections, advise on counter-abuse strategies, and build monitoring and alerting dashboards to track abuse levels, perform quality checks to measure system/model reliability, and resolve false positives.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product managers, program manager groups to develop requirements documents based on data analysis and granular product knowledge.
