Hardware Validation Engineer, Servers and Compute, Platforms Infrastructure

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience working in hardware systems design and testing, or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree.
  • Experience with lab equipment like scopes, BERTs and analyzers.
  • Experience with servers and compute platform architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • 1 year of experience in technical leadership.
  • Experience collecting and organizing data to reproduce results and explain what happened, enabling quick, accurate failure analysis from suppliers where needed.
  • Experience using scripting and automation to execute test algorithms, and then analyze results.
  • System-level understanding of server products.
  • Understanding of high speed transceiver interfaces like PCIe (physical, DLL and transaction layer), and memory interfaces like DDR4/DDR5 as well as the requirements to test them.

About the job

Platforms Infrastructure Engineering designs, builds and collaborates on the hardware, software and networking technologies that power all of Google's services. As a Hardware Qualification Engineer in Google's design and validation team, you will qualify new components, servers, storage devices and specialized machine learning hardware for Google's data centers, ensuring they meet Google's stringent requirements for performance, security, reliability, and features.

As a Hardware Validation Engineer, you will qualify new servers and specialized hardware for Google's data centers.

Google's custom-designed machines make up one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world. The Hardware Qualification team ensures that this equipment operates properly electrically, functions as intended, meets quality requirements and exhibits the level of reliability expected by customers. You will work within our lab environments, planning for and executing the required testing at scale and in an effective way. Working closely with design engineers, you will give inputs on designs to improve our hardware until you're sure it meets Google's standards of quality, reliability, and security.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $142,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Create test plans and coordinate resources across test environments. Perform electrical, functional, performance and reliability testing for server products. Analyze results to ensure that they meet Google's requirements.
  • Use scopes, protocol analyzers, BERTs and other lab equipment to collect high precision data. Organize data and incorporate learnings to maintain and improve the qualification process.
  • Validate high speed interfaces like PCIe Gen 5/6 and DDR5, running electrical and protocol compliance testing and performing interoperability testing.
  • Collaborate with Original Device Manufacturing (ODM)/Joint Development Manufacturing (JDM) to ensure that the validation is up to Google standards.
  • Communicate status updates to cross-functional teams and leadership. Report bugs and drive corrective action where needed with external suppliers and internal development teams.
