Staff Technical Writer, AI Data

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience in technical writing, instructional design, or a similar role, with a focus on creating instructions for human-in-the-loop tasks or rater platforms.
  • Experience in task definition and instruction design principles and best practices.
  • Experience with HTML, Python, Data analysis, Markdown, or version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders and translate requirements into clear, actionable instructions for the audience.
  • Experience in developing and delivering training programs.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Technical Communication, Instructional Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
  • Experience working with large-scale human evaluation platforms, crowdsourcing, or rater-based data collection programs.
  • Experience designing tasks for complex domains.
  • Experience with data analysis to inform instruction improvement.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and data labeling processes.

Technical writers communicate complex information clearly, concisely and accurately, and without relying on jargon. As a technical writer, your role involves tasks such as writing conceptual overviews and procedures, reading and writing example code, or updating help center queries and FAQs. Technical writers play a big part at Google. They are a key link between developers, marketing associates, developer advocates, as well as all the external users and developers, tying together many vital but disparate parts of the Google ecosystem.

You develop complex, in-depth communications for internal and external audiences and manage projects that involve coordinating multiple junior writers.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is a critical area of investment for Google. We have a big opportunity to further unify developer tooling and infrastructure to meet the fast pace of innovation in an ever evolving field that is critical to many of Google’s products.


AI Data operations will be the new center of gravity for Google’s AI/ML infrastructure efforts, strengthening cross-Google accountability and execution around key AI/ML efforts. The new AI Data organization will be responsible for creating a cohesive, well lit path for AI/ML at Google. Google's programs, like our users, span the globe and require managers to keep the big picture in focus.

As a Technical Writer at Google, you will lead complex, multidisciplinary programs. You will plan requirements with internal customers and usher projects through the entire project life-cycle. Your projects often span offices, time zones and hemispheres, and you will keep all the players coordinated on the project's progress and deadlines.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $153,000-$227,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategy and execution of task design and instruction creation for GenAI programs, establishing best practices and templates.
  • Collaborate deeply with Product Areas to understand their data needs, define clear task requirements, and provide expert consultation on task design.
  • Design, write, and iterate on high-quality rater instructions and guidelines that are clear, concise, and minimize ambiguity to ensure high-quality data output.
  • Develop and implement an internal training program and comprehensive knowledge base on task design principles and best practices to empower Product Areas.
  • Transform complex and often ambiguous technical information from engineers and researchers into effective rater task designs. Author, edit, and maintain a range of technical documents, including in-depth task design guides, instruction templates, and Quality Control (QC) rubrics. Act as a pilot user for new workflows, refining instructions based on practical application.
