Hardware Engineering Manager, Google Beam

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in technical leadership.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP).
  • Experience in designing hardware systems of high technical complexity for Video Conferencing, VR/AR headsets, or High-End Gaming systems.
  • Familiarity in integration of one or more of the following subsystems: Display Systems, Imaging Systems, Compute/AI Hardware, Power/Thermal management, etc.
  • Understanding of the hardware product development process, from concept to manufacturing at CMs/ODMs.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time to client/customer sites as needed.

As the Hardware Engineering Manager for Electrical and Firmware Engineering, you will lead the team responsible for the electrical heart and nervous system of the Beam product line. You will manage the design of complex main logic boards (MLBs), flex circuits, and power systems, while simultaneously overseeing the system-level integration that ensures signal integrity, power delivery, and electromagnetic coexistence. You will be the architect who ensures that our massive data pipelines (Video/Audio/ML) run on reliable, manufacturable hardware. This is a high-visibility leadership role where you will guide architectural decisions, drive the system verification strategy from prototype to mass production, and mentor a high-performing team of executive engineers.Google Beam is a true-to-life new communication technology from Google that allows people to feel like they’re having real face-to-face conversations, no matter the distance. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $221,000-$311,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead, grow, and structure a hybrid team of Electrical Engineers, Firmware Engineers and Systems Integration Engineers. Define roadmap for electrical architecture and system validation tools.
  • Own the electrical system design and firmware development, including high-speed digital design (processors, memories, high-speed interfaces), power architecture (AC/DC, DC/DC, PMIC), and mixed-signal sensor integration (cameras, microphones, depth sensors).
  • Drive the "System Layout" strategy. Oversee signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) simulation and validation. Manage desense, EMI/EMC compliance, and thermal/electrical trade-offs in a dense, high-performance chassis.
  • Partner with Software to define strategies and hardware abstraction layers. Work with Mechanical Engineering on interconnects, cabling, and thermal solutions.
  • Manage the EE/SI deliverables for JDM/ODM partners from prototype (EVT) through Mass Production (MP). Lead root-cause analysis for complex electrical failures in the factory and the field.
